Dropbox not only keeps your libraries in sync, it also stores previous versions of your library for up to 30 days. This means that if your database is corrupted, you can use Dropbox to restore a previous uncorrupted version of your library.

Back Up Your Current Databases

  • Close Papers and Citations, if it they are running
  • Open the Terminal.app. You will find this in Applications/Utilities, or from a spotlight search
  • Copy and paste the following command into Terminal exactly as is:

cp "${HOME}/Library/Application Support/$(defaults read com.mekentosj.papers3 mt_papers3_library_location_local)/Library.papers3/Database.papersdb" ~/Desktop/LocalDatabase.papersdb

  • Copy and paste the following command into Terminal exactly as is:

cp "$(defaults read com.mekentosj.papers3 mt_papers3_library_location_shared)/Library.papers3/Database.papersdb" ~/Desktop/SharedDatabase.papersdb

Find a Previous Version on Dropbox

  • Open your Dropbox folder from the Dropbox website
  • Open the Library.papers3 folder
  • Right-click the file Database.papersdb and select "Previous versions"
  • Have a look at the dates and times and chose a version that was created most recently experience corruption
  • "Restore" this version

Open Papers with the Restored Library

  • Once the restore is complete please go back to Terminal
  • Copy and paste the following command into Terminal exactly as is:

cp "$(defaults read com.mekentosj.papers3 mt_papers3_library_location_shared)/Library.papers3/Database.papersdb" \
"$HOME/Library/Application Support/$(defaults read com.mekentosj.papers3 mt_papers3_library_location_local)/Library.papers3/Database.papersdb"

  • Hit enter, then check to see that no errors are reported
  • Restart Papers 3

Back Up Your Current Database

  • Go to Windows Explorer and type %appdata%
  • Navigate to your local library (it is usually located at C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Mekentosj\Papers2)
  • Open the Papers 2 folder
  • Select the library.papers3 folder
  • Copy the database.papersdb file and paste it somewhere safe

Find a Previous Version on Dropbox

  • Replace the current database.papersdb by pasting the database you copied earlier in its location
