A final option for users who have experienced database corruption and are unable to restore from Dropbox, a backup, or using the shared database would be to retrieve the PDFs from the library folder.

This method will loose any annotations and collections, but Papers should be able to automatically recover some metadata for articles automatically if they contain DOIs.

Retrieve Your PDFs

  • Close Papers and Citations, if it they are running
  • Go to your Documents folder
  • Find the library.papers3 file
  • Right-click library.papers3 and select Show Package Contents
  • Copy the folders containing your PDFs and paste them somewhere safe

Reset Papers 3

  • Reset the application
  • Restart Papers 3
  • Walk through initial installation until you are viewing a new empty library

Import Your PDFs to a New Library

  • Drag the folders containing your PDFs that you copied earlier and drop them into your new empty library

  • Find the Articles folder containing your PDFs
