Feature Requests

Have a great idea for a new feature we should include in the next version of ReadCube? Let us know here, on our Feature Request public forum.

If you see your idea listed here already, be sure to check the comments—we may have posted information or an update about the feature you desire!

It would be cool if ReadCube could...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. add in pdf bookmarks

I commonly use Adobe Acrobat's bookmark feature to save location points in pdf documents, such as introduction, method, study 1, study 2 so i can quickly navigate the document.

  2. link in the Zotero quick-add button when viewing the "Article page"

When you open the "Article page", it would by handy if you could see the same quick-add button that you'd see in another browser with the Zotero add-on.

Currently, I have to copy the article title, open Chrome/browser, search for the article again, and then click the Zotero quick-add button.

With this improvement, you eliminate all but one step, making it a one-step add for in-text citations with Word/document editor!

  3. Smartcite CTRL CTRL ans Cursor

When I double click CTRL the smartcite pop-up shows up, but when I type I'm still in the word document (I first have to click the search box to type start searching the article I need).
It would be great if the cursor would be in the searc box after 2xCTRL.

    Thanks

  4. Let you enter notes directly on the page, as text or as a pop-up note.

The free-form note page that drops down is great, as are the notes on highlighting. However, some older/scanned pdf documents don't permit highlighting of the text - on these documents, it isn't possible to annotate specific regions. Having the ability to put a textbox or mouse-over pop-up note on specific regions of the text would be really great ('Foxit' has this functionality, for comparison).

  5. show the lists (labels) where an article belongs to.

When showing the paper information, it would be useful to see if it has been assigned to a list.

  6. allow users to increase font size of abstract in right hand panel

The abstract would be easier and quicker to read if the font size was a bit larger. Nice would be a control-up/down short cut. Esp. more senior people would probably apreciate this.

  7. Have shortcut keys for common actions in the ReadCube reader

    Add keystrokes to:
-delete a file from a list
-delete a file from the library
    -auto-resolve a file
-navigate from file to file without going back to the library
    -add a note
    -switch to highlighter

  8. provide an interface for evernote and/or MarginNote.

Read cube is great for organizing articles. Eververnote is great for organizing multiple notes, links, thought, etc. and MarginNote is great for cross references and lateral thinking.
Providing an interface that allows to open pfds in MarginNote or to save notes/highlighted parts/ screenshots to evernote, would greatly enhance productivity and combine the best of all.

  9. have an option to bold, italisize, or underline text in notes

You should be able to do basic modifications to your text, like ctrl+I to italisize ctrl+U to underline and ctrl+B to bold text in our notes

  10. preview pdf when searching my library

Similar to apple's finder, it would be nice to preview the pdf's when searching my library.

  11. Export comments to Evernote

It would be great if it was possible to export the notes and highlights to Evernote. The title of the note should be the reference and they can be stored in a Readcube notebook.

  12. Recieve weekly PubMed search outcomes

I recieve weekly e-mail from pubmed containing the results of preset searches (all based on keywords). It would be cool if one could do similar Pubmed searches directly in Readcube.

  13. allow users to attach supplemental files to a reference item

Part of my workflow includes saving marked up versions of documents as their own files, as well as typing up specially-formatted notes on my PDF documents in separate files. (I create these files and save them as PDFs. These are not the supplemental files provided by some publishers along with articles.)

It would be LOVELY if I could attach self-created supplemental files to a PDF item in my reference list.

  15. Roadmap

Please consider publishing a roadmap with upcoming features, like e.g. 'sync support in Q4 2013'.

    Thanks!

  16. correctly export bibtex files when searched with google scholar

bibtex export works fine for publications imported by pubmed search.
when imported by google scholar search, the author field contains a number of 'null's. probably simple bug fix.

  17. Work without the user needing administrator rights on their computer

My university imposes many restrictions on the use of our work computers, meaning that I do not have admin rights. Those seem however to be needed for the operation of the software. Indeed, our technician says that Readcube needs access to the registry, which is not allowed to the standard user. It is therefore not possible for me to use Readcube at work.

  18. allow specific timeframes for recommendations

When offering recommendations, allow the user to choose a year or years to pull recommendations from. The difference between last year an anytime is too great.

  19. Allow non-unique names for sublists

Recently a nested sublist feature has been implemented, but it does not allow for a "true" nested structure. It can't be collapsed, and sublists must have unique names, even if they are put under a different parent list (e.g. you can create the list "clinical trials" under "****** cancer", but if then you try to create "clinical trials" under "colon cancer", the former will be erased. My proposition is to make sublists collapsible, and their names non-unique.

  20. Allowed re-ordering of list

I have around 20 lists and it could be great to be able to reorder them alphabetically or whatever I like. It looks like I can't change the order and last created list is at the bottom even if it would be easier to be close to another list.
