Feature Requests

Have a great idea for a new feature we should include in the next version of ReadCube? Let us know here, on our Feature Request public forum.

If you see your idea listed here already, be sure to check the comments—we may have posted information or an update about the feature you desire!

It would be cool if ReadCube could...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  2. Have the option to delete the pdf file when I delete a paper from my library

ReadCube only deletes PDFs from your library, but the file remains on your computer. Having the option to delete both would be helpful when trying to clean up one's library.

  3. export to Notability (app) when the iOS version for iPads comes up

it would be useful if pdf files on Readcube could be exported to Notability or Evernote when the iOS version is released. Or even if the current desktop version could export to Evernote desktop version

  5. Open multiple PDFs in different panes

I often cycle between many articles and have them open at the same time, side by side. I find the one window - toggling back and forth affects my flow when writing.

  6. Change the page background color.

Reading on bright white is difficult and very harmful to eyes. As word and adobe can work, if i change the background to some light green, it fells softer to stare at the screen for quite a while.

    Hi ReadCube users!

We understand that this is a really important feature for a lot of you, as white backgrounds do strain your eyes and are difficult to look at after long periods of time. This is definitely something we want to work on at some point and implement as an actual feature.

For now, I recommend giving http://justgetflux.com/ a shot, as it is designed to reduce eyestrain for your entire monitor and should function as an appropriate substitute for the time being.

Thanks so much for your patience and feedback!

    Alex

  8. Perform a smarter (and not heuristic) date sorting.

Date sorting of articles (currently only by year) appears to be heuristic (changes from one session to another) which is REALLY annoying.

Performing a smarter (based on DD/MM/YY of publication) sorting of articles would avoid this issue and help keeping a well organized library.

  9. Automatically download articles from reference data

When importing references or bibliographies, it would be great if readcube could automatically download the pdf and associated supporting information from the web without having to click on the 'download from web' button.

  10. Roadmap

Please consider publishing a roadmap with upcoming features, like e.g. 'sync support in Q4 2013'.

    Thanks!

  11. highlight and add in-line notes to scanned articles.

Sometimes I only have access to a scanned PDF -- for example, one that was retrieved through interlibrary loan. For such PDFs, it would be nice to be able to add in-line notes and highlighting even if ReadCube is unable to recognize the text.

  12. be portable

i.e. be able to run from a microSD card or from a USB flash drive, without requiring installation on a local machine. Not all researchers can lug around a laptop, but almost everyone carries a phone.

  13. Have shortcut keys for common actions in the ReadCube reader

    Add keystrokes to:
-delete a file from a list
-delete a file from the library
    -auto-resolve a file
-navigate from file to file without going back to the library
    -add a note
    -switch to highlighter

  15. be my default PDF reader.

I should be able to set this as my default reader so that I don't have to also keep an alternative reader around just to open the odd PDF that is not imported. Currently, if set as default, the PDF does not open but ReadCube manager does.

  16. Allow non-unique names for sublists

Recently a nested sublist feature has been implemented, but it does not allow for a "true" nested structure. It can't be collapsed, and sublists must have unique names, even if they are put under a different parent list (e.g. you can create the list "clinical trials" under "****** cancer", but if then you try to create "clinical trials" under "colon cancer", the former will be erased. My proposition is to make sublists collapsible, and their names non-unique.

  17. NOT clip abstracts that are too long

Abstracts that are too long are not shown in full, but are clipped ("..."). This is annoying, because often useful information is lost. And I don't see why it should be necessary to shorten the abstracts.
I would appreciate if for every paper, the entire abstract was visible on the right side.

  18. have an "undo" feature.

For example, I just accidentally deleted a note I wrote. I tried pressing
command Z, and it did nothing. This made me sad.

  20. remember my position

When switching between Full Text and Supplementary Information my position is lost, I'm just sent to the start of the document. This is a bit frustrating when reading an article that refers regularly to a supplementary document.
