Feature Requests

Have a great idea for a new feature we should include in the next version of ReadCube? Let us know here, on our Feature Request public forum.

If you see your idea listed here already, be sure to check the comments—we may have posted information or an update about the feature you desire!

It would be cool if ReadCube could...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Ask to download articles via cloud during sync

Right now, the sync feature only downloads metadata but not the entire pdf files. Each article has to be downloaded separately. It would be cool if we could choose articles or lists or the entire library that we want to download automatically during sync.

  2. Support SmartCite in google docs

I do a lot of collaborative writing and we frequently use google docs. There is currently no good way to input the citations from readcube into google docs. It would be amazing if SmartCite working in the google docs application.

  3. expose its API to let users create plugins or simply automatise their database management

There will always be functions that users would like to have that are not present in ReadCube (at a given point in time). If ReadCube could expose some kind of API to let their users interface with it from programming languages - it would spark whole ecosystem of plugins and extenstions.
An inspiring example is SublimeText - proprietary software that exposes an API for python. SublimeText has now more than 2500 plugins extending its functionality. Many of these extensions are wonderful tools!

  4. Enable text-to-speech functionality

Have a text to speech option available. As a dyslexic, i find this incredibly useful.

  5. Prevent articles from being accidentally added twice, warn you if it is happening, or find a way to quickly resolve that issue.

When you add an article, sometimes it can get accidentally added twice. Then you might have it in the library twice, with different versions, different annotations, and in different folders (potentially)

  6. Detect and suggest pdf updates when available

Two situations where this feature would be useful:

    1. Some publishers (Science mag, BMC) allow early online access to publications and provide a draft pdf version of the paper which lacks the regular format of the journal. Once the whole publication process has been completed, a new pdf is available with an improved and much more readable layout.

    2. Editors may receive corrections of the original paper later after publication. This would appear online as an Erratum/Corrigendum, but it is often integrated into the pdf version.

  8. Be available on Chrome OS for those who use Google Chromebook computers

Mac and Windows are great but Chrome is quickly becoming the #3 major operating system, especially with the increasing popularity of Chromebook computers. It would be great to have ReadCube available there as well.

  9. Share papers/notes/comments with Readcube-using colleagues (Collaboration, i.e.)

It would greatly add to the functionality of Readcube if we could find a nice paper, and then share it with a colleague, share our notes on it, or specific comments, all through Readcube. I guess this would entail Readcube having to maintain a network of clients within itself: a colleague network, say. Complex, but innovative.

  10. Rotate Pages

In the papers I read, there can be tables which are positioned on their sides covering the whole A4 sheet of paper. It would be helpful if there was a rotate feature available.

  11. Please add dictionary to the readcube

The new update in readcube is amazing (sync feature). It would be helpful if readcube embeds a scientific dictionary in their software. It makes reading more fun.

    Thanks,
    Venkata

  12. Link my articles, and the links could be seen in a graphical format like a MINDMAP

Every article we read has a specific relationship with other article i.e. cited by, cited in, disproved by, earlier work of same author, same work in other species o model system, etc. At present we can have a folder with many articles. And to though we can make notes with each article, we can not see all of them together,One needs to open each article abstract to see. IT could be really great if we can make our links between articles and view them in a graphical format, like a MIND MAP, i.e. A flowchart depicting all the work that…

  14. highlight and add in-line notes to scanned articles.

Sometimes I only have access to a scanned PDF -- for example, one that was retrieved through interlibrary loan. For such PDFs, it would be nice to be able to add in-line notes and highlighting even if ReadCube is unable to recognize the text.

  15. Show What Lists a Paper Was Added To In Its My Library Description

Currently I do not see a way to find out what lists a Paper has already been posted to in ReadCube other than to click on the list and look to see what papers are there.

What I think would be helpful is to show the lists under the title in the My Library's pane. This would be something akin to how GMail shows you the Labels that you have assigned an email to.

I am thinking that this information must already be in your database, and you would only need to write it to the display.

    Anything that isn't…

  16. allow smart lists

I think having smart lists would be a big benefit of having this program. For example, if I have a smart list that links all papers that have XPS in the title, or an authors name would help in organizing my files.

  17. have a "two-page" view option, as many modern screens are quite wide and could accommodate this

have a "two-page" view option, as many modern screens are quite wide and could accommodate this, and it would be much better for reading papers directly on the monitor

  18. have a split view in the PDF browser so that you can see two parts of the document at the same time.

Provide a mechanism so that you can view two or more parts of a PDF document at the same time. For example, it is common to want to see a figure on a different page while reading text.

  19. have a native 64-bit support to make full use of 4GB of RAM available in most laptops.

Most folks here are using laptops with at least 4GB of RAM available to them. Hope to see readcube comes up with a 64-bit version of the software to make full use of the hardware powers.

  20. Automatically download articles from reference data

When importing references or bibliographies, it would be great if readcube could automatically download the pdf and associated supporting information from the web without having to click on the 'download from web' button.
