Feature Requests

Have a great idea for a new feature we should include in the next version of ReadCube? Let us know here, on our Feature Request public forum.

If you see your idea listed here already, be sure to check the comments—we may have posted information or an update about the feature you desire!

It would be cool if ReadCube could...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Make a fully functional ReadCube Windows 10 app

With Windows 10 it's possible to make one app for all Windows devices (phones, tablets, hybrids, laptops, pc's... even Xbox) with a scalable UI. ReadCube from phone to TV!
It would be great to have full touch and pen support for devices like a Surface, or any other Windows tablet with pen. That way PDF's can be annotated in any possible way, just like paper.
It's now even possible for developers to easily port the Android/iOS app. ;)

  2. Have shortcut keys for common actions in the ReadCube reader

    Add keystrokes to:
-delete a file from a list
-delete a file from the library
    -auto-resolve a file
-navigate from file to file without going back to the library
    -add a note
    -switch to highlighter

  3. Prevent articles from being accidentally added twice, warn you if it is happening, or find a way to quickly resolve that issue.

When you add an article, sometimes it can get accidentally added twice. Then you might have it in the library twice, with different versions, different annotations, and in different folders (potentially)

  4. Open multiple PDFs in different panes

I often cycle between many articles and have them open at the same time, side by side. I find the one window - toggling back and forth affects my flow when writing.

  5. Have the option to delete the pdf file when I delete a paper from my library

ReadCube only deletes PDFs from your library, but the file remains on your computer. Having the option to delete both would be helpful when trying to clean up one's library.

  6. Change highlight colors without deleting them first

Sometimes I highlight a part with yellow, and later find it more important, and recolor it with red. In such cases, I wish I can change the color without deleting the highlight first, as I can with any major PDF viewers including Preview or Acrobat.

  8. have a native 64-bit support to make full use of 4GB of RAM available in most laptops.

Most folks here are using laptops with at least 4GB of RAM available to them. Hope to see readcube comes up with a 64-bit version of the software to make full use of the hardware powers.

  9. be my default PDF reader.

I should be able to set this as my default reader so that I don't have to also keep an alternative reader around just to open the odd PDF that is not imported. Currently, if set as default, the PDF does not open but ReadCube manager does.

  10. Allow non-unique names for sublists

Recently a nested sublist feature has been implemented, but it does not allow for a "true" nested structure. It can't be collapsed, and sublists must have unique names, even if they are put under a different parent list (e.g. you can create the list "clinical trials" under "****** cancer", but if then you try to create "clinical trials" under "colon cancer", the former will be erased. My proposition is to make sublists collapsible, and their names non-unique.

  11. NOT clip abstracts that are too long

Abstracts that are too long are not shown in full, but are clipped ("..."). This is annoying, because often useful information is lost. And I don't see why it should be necessary to shorten the abstracts.
I would appreciate if for every paper, the entire abstract was visible on the right side.

  12. allow articles to be sorted by number of citations

It is helpful when doing a literature review on a topic to be able to see publication date and number of times articles have been cited in a single glance. I need to know what papers are most important in a certain area, so I would like to be able to sort articles in a list in my library by number of times each paper has been cited.

  13. have an "undo" feature.

For example, I just accidentally deleted a note I wrote. I tried pressing
command Z, and it did nothing. This made me sad.

  16. remember my position

When switching between Full Text and Supplementary Information my position is lost, I'm just sent to the start of the document. This is a bit frustrating when reading an article that refers regularly to a supplementary document.

  17. Associate a color with a list when viewing articles in my library

I want to assign a color code to my lists, and then view color tagged articles in my library. I should also be able to see if an article belongs to more than one list.

  18. Button that places article in a "Must Read" or "Reading List" list (just like Favorites function)

Clicking this button would place a paper in your "Reading List" which would be located in the left panel under the "Favorites" list. The button would be in the same location as the "add to favorites" link.

  19. delete whole search terms

After searching for something, the search terms are separated (which I love). But, you can no longer highlight the text, so to delete everything, you need to delete the last letter, then highlight, delete all, and start again. Once the term is entered, can you delete it all at once?Using the keyboard delete key?

  20. show you where exactly it found the search text

As google does, show you a highlighted mark where the engine found your text in order to understand the context.
