Feature Requests

Have a great idea for a new feature we should include in the next version of ReadCube? Let us know here, on our Feature Request public forum.

If you see your idea listed here already, be sure to check the comments—we may have posted information or an update about the feature you desire!

It would be cool if ReadCube could...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Improve the rendering of the PDF viewer

At least in OSX, the quality of the PDF rendering is not as good as some other PDF viewers. I have observed this in a few of computers. This leads me to read the PDF in other programs and use readcube only to search/categorize the files. If would be great if you could improve the rendering of the PDF viewer, so that I would not need to leave the program to read the articles.

  2. Export comments to Evernote

It would be great if it was possible to export the notes and highlights to Evernote. The title of the note should be the reference and they can be stored in a Readcube notebook.

  3. provide an interface for evernote and/or MarginNote.

Read cube is great for organizing articles. Eververnote is great for organizing multiple notes, links, thought, etc. and MarginNote is great for cross references and lateral thinking.
Providing an interface that allows to open pfds in MarginNote or to save notes/highlighted parts/ screenshots to evernote, would greatly enhance productivity and combine the best of all.

  4. Make a fully functional ReadCube Windows 10 app

With Windows 10 it's possible to make one app for all Windows devices (phones, tablets, hybrids, laptops, pc's... even Xbox) with a scalable UI. ReadCube from phone to TV!
It would be great to have full touch and pen support for devices like a Surface, or any other Windows tablet with pen. That way PDF's can be annotated in any possible way, just like paper.
It's now even possible for developers to easily port the Android/iOS app. ;)

  5. show the lists (labels) where an article belongs to.

When showing the paper information, it would be useful to see if it has been assigned to a list.

  6. Associate a color with a list when viewing articles in my library

I want to assign a color code to my lists, and then view color tagged articles in my library. I should also be able to see if an article belongs to more than one list.

  7. have a split view in the PDF browser so that you can see two parts of the document at the same time.

Provide a mechanism so that you can view two or more parts of a PDF document at the same time. For example, it is common to want to see a figure on a different page while reading text.

  8. Mark article as read/unread

It would be nice to mark an article as unread, so as the library grows you can keep track of the articles to be read.

  9. Support SmartCite in google docs

I do a lot of collaborative writing and we frequently use google docs. There is currently no good way to input the citations from readcube into google docs. It would be amazing if SmartCite working in the google docs application.

  10. Have the option to delete the pdf file when I delete a paper from my library

ReadCube only deletes PDFs from your library, but the file remains on your computer. Having the option to delete both would be helpful when trying to clean up one's library.

  11. Prevent articles from being accidentally added twice, warn you if it is happening, or find a way to quickly resolve that issue.

When you add an article, sometimes it can get accidentally added twice. Then you might have it in the library twice, with different versions, different annotations, and in different folders (potentially)

  12. Rotate Pages

In the papers I read, there can be tables which are positioned on their sides covering the whole A4 sheet of paper. It would be helpful if there was a rotate feature available.

  13. directly open an article instead of performing a search when clicking a reference if the target article is already in your library

Readcube always performs a search for an article when you click on a reference on the list on the right of the window. This search is also performed even if the article is already in your personal library and stored on your computer. You notice that when you try to download the article because readcube shows you an "view article" button rather than a download button.
However it would be much smother if you could directly access the desired article just by clicking the reference link without performing the search first if the article is already in your library.

  14. support SmartCite on the Scrivener word processor

Scrivener is a great word processor for long documents such as doctoral thesis, SmartCite would enable to use it seamlessly along with ReadCube

  15. have an option to bold, italisize, or underline text in notes

You should be able to do basic modifications to your text, like ctrl+I to italisize ctrl+U to underline and ctrl+B to bold text in our notes

  16. Open multiple PDFs in different panes

I often cycle between many articles and have them open at the same time, side by side. I find the one window - toggling back and forth affects my flow when writing.

  17. have an "undo" feature.

For example, I just accidentally deleted a note I wrote. I tried pressing
command Z, and it did nothing. This made me sad.

  18. allow smart lists

I think having smart lists would be a big benefit of having this program. For example, if I have a smart list that links all papers that have XPS in the title, or an authors name would help in organizing my files.

  19. Have a notes/comments only search

It would be great if readcube could let us search notes only rather than just our whole library. That way we could quickly find notes to follow up on specfic projects or ideas that occur to us while scanning the literature. Ideally we could click through from there to the section highlighted or noted in the original paper.

  20. Change highlight colors without deleting them first

Sometimes I highlight a part with yellow, and later find it more important, and recolor it with red. In such cases, I wish I can change the color without deleting the highlight first, as I can with any major PDF viewers including Preview or Acrobat.
